Murcia Bike Hire Routes – Cartagena, El Cedacero, La Azohia and La Cuesta
Starting from Los Alcazares from the 4 star Hotel 525 one of our suggested hotels from our tailored cycling holidays. We Ride out of Los Alcazares Calle Isla de Tabarca and turn right onto RM-F26 over the AP7 and then at the roundabout 3rd exit onto the RM-F35. The RM-F35 takes you to the city of Cartagena, where we make our way to the port for well earned refreshments.
The city of Cartagena has a rich history with influences from the Punic, Roman, military and art nouveau. With so many things to see and do, Cartagena has become one of the most appealing destinations in the Mediterranean. We have included this city in our cycling holidays section and would definitely recommend you consider visiting the city during your stay.
The distance from Los Alcazares to the Puerto de Cartagena is a 25km and relatively flat ride, but things will start to change as you make you way out of the city towards Canteras and El Cedacero.
After coffee and cake in Cartagena we start the next part of our route towards La Azohia, a pretty fishing village on the Mediterranean coast, with wide expanses of sand and a mountain backdrop. .
Heading out of Cartagena, towards Canteras and onto the E-22, you will start your ascent to the summit of El Cedacero, before descending into La Azohia. The distance for this section is 24km with 12.5km of climbing and an average gradient of 2.5% and from this direction definitely nothing more than 5%.
A few photo opportunities on this descent, with the highlight being the tight horseshoe bend requiring great care before speeding up and enjoying the views of the mountains and down into the bay.
Towards the end of the descent we make a left turn into La Azohia and ride around the bay to the Torre de Santa Elena.
We advise you to plan your route allowing time to stop for tapas in La Azohia, with many restaurants to choose from and to be able to sample some local fresh fish dishes
Our recommendations for lunch would be one of the following:-

- Restaurante La Bodega Molina
- Antipodas Tavern
Having enjoyed a local tapas lunch and visited the Torre de Santa Elena, its time to continue back onto the E-22 and along the coast towards Isla Plana and the outskirts of Puerto de Mazarron. At the roundabout where you will see the Repsol petrol station take the RM-332 which is another local climb known as “Alto de la Cuesta” with a summit at 352m. The petrol station is you last chance to top up any water bottles before commencing the climb. The climb distance is 10km an average gradient of 3.5% and but from this direction definitely nothing more than 7%.
Once your reached the summit then its the end of the climbs for the day with a rolling ride back to Los Alcazares via Cartagena through villages and towns.
