Description

Mar Menor Golf Resort – GPX Route 6

Ride Overview

Route 6 is for riders who want a proper climb on their holiday miles. Rolling north-west from Mar Menor Golf Resort, you cut across quiet campo lanes to the base of Cresta del Gallo—Murcia’s iconic ridge that overlooks the city and the Segura plain. A switch-backing ascent delivers 360° views from 430 m, before a pine-scented descent and a fast, wind-kissed run home across the lagoon corridor. It’s the perfect “big-day-out-before-tapas” loop: plenty of climbing, plenty of scenery, and smooth tarmac almost all the way.

Rides Statistics

  • Distance: ≈ 97 km
  • Elevation Gain: ≈ 1,200 m
  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Estimated Time: 3 ¾ – 5 ¼ hours
  • Start/Finish: Mar Menor Golf Resort

What to Expect

  • Campo warm-up – Cruise through Torre-Pacheco, Balsicas and Sucina on billiard-smooth farm roads with orange and lemon groves on both sides.

  • Cresta del Gallo climb (km 45–50) – 5 km at 4–7 %, ramping to 10 % in the final hairpins; roadside pines give welcome shade.

  • Panoramic summit – Mirador and chapel offer widescreen views across Murcia city, Sierra Espuña and—on clear days—the Mediterranean sparkle.

  • Technical descent – Flowing bends and perfect asphalt down to La Alberca; stay light on the brakes and watch for loose gravel in the forest gullies.

  • Flat-out finale – Re-enter the Mar Menor corridor near San Javier for a wide-shouldered, tail-wind-friendly drag back to the resort gate.

Key Highlights

  • Chapel-crowned Mirador de la Cresta del Gallo – selfie spot par excellence.

  • Patchwork citrus orchards and spring orange-blossom perfume.

  • Wild-flower verges in March–May; ochre wheat fields by early summer.

  • Minimal traffic once you clear the Murcia suburbs—ideal for group rotations.

Rider Tips

  1. Hydration: Start with two full bidons; reliable fuentes in Sucina (km 32) and La Alberca (km 55).

  2. Gearing: Compact 50/34 T with an 11-30 T cassette is perfect; strong climbers survive on 11-28 T.

  3. Heat: The Cresta faces south—aim to summit before midday in high summer.

  4. Wind: Afternoon easterlies funnel across the lagoon; hold something back for the last 15 km.

  5. Navigation: Download the GPX to your Garmin/Wahoo—mobile signal dips briefly in the Cresta forest.
