Ride Overview
This big coastal adventure links the rugged coves of the Costa Cálida with two of the Region of Murcia’s most iconic climbs. Rolling west from La Manga Club you skirt the turquoise Calblanque Natural Park, cut through bustling Cartagena harbour, then trace the shoreline all the way to Isla Plana before looping inland over the dramatic ridgelines of Alto del Cedacero and La Muela. Expect Mediterranean vistas, pine-scented switchbacks and café-rich fishing villages that make refuelling a breeze.

What to Expect
Ease out of the resort along palm-lined lanes and you’ll quickly feel the salt-tinged breeze of the Mar Menor. A gentle coastal warm-up delivers you to the ancient port city of Cartagena; roll past Roman walls and naval docks before the road tilts skyward through the craggy Sierra de la Muela. The first major climb tops out near 300 m with balcony views across the glittering bay of Mazarrón.
Drop into Isla Plana for a beach-front coffee stop, then hug the roller-coaster shoreline to La Azohía where turquoise water meets rugged red rock. Save legs for the day’s sting: the serpentine Alto del Cedacero—another 300 m summit crowned by a military lookout and panoramic Mediterranean sweep. From here it’s a succession of flowing descents and short, punchy ramps through pine forest before re-joining smooth fast lanes back to La Manga Club, often assisted by a friendly tailwind.
In a nutshell you’ll get:
Two signature climbs (each ≈ 4–6 km, 5–7 % avg)
Endless sea views and dramatic cliff-side roads
Fisher-town cafés for tostada & cortado refuels
Mostly pristine tarmac with light weekday traffic
Key Highlights
Mirador del Cedacero: 360° lookout over the Costa Cálida.
Roman amphitheatre & naval dockyards in historic Cartagena.
Isla Plana & La Azohía promenades – perfect mid-ride photo ops.
Spring carpets of wild rosemary and lavender lining the Sierra roads.
Rider Tips
Take a compact chainset (50/34 t) or 30-t rear sprocket for the 10 % pitches.
Two large bottles recommended; reliable fuentes in Cartagena (km 22) & Isla Plana (km 55).
Early starts mean quieter traffic through the city and cooler temps on the exposed climbs.
A lightweight gilet is handy – descents can feel fresh even on sunny days.
Drop the GPX onto Garmin, Wahoo or Komoot for turn-by-turn cues when phone signal fades in the sierras.
